University Background

The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) is a fully fledged, autonomous, and authorized public university founded by Act No. 17 of Parliament in 1992. The Act went into effect on March 1, 1993, with the publication of Government Notice No. 55 in the Official Gazette. On January 19, 1994, the first Chancellor was officially inaugurated in a complete ceremony, and the first batch of students was admitted. Following the passage of the Universities Act No. 7 of 2005, OUT began using the OUT Charter and Rules (2007) for its operations in January 2007.

The Open University of Tanzania provides certificate, diploma, degree, and postgraduate courses via an open and distance learning system that encompasses a variety of communication methods such as face-to-face, broadcasting, and email, telecasting, correspondence, seminars, e-learning as well as a blended mode which is a combination of two or more means of communication. The OUT’s academic programmes are quality-assured and centrally regulated by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU).
