Mwenge Catholic University (MWECAU) evolved from St. Josephs Teachers College, a former Teachers’ College (TC) founded in 2001 to prepare Science Teachers for Secondary Schools. In 2005, the TC was raised to the status of a University College of Education (MWUCE) connected with Tanzania’s St Augustine University. By TCU order, MWUCE was granted the status of a Fully Fledged University in July 2014, renamed Mwenge Catholic University and abbreviated MWECAU. Tanzania Episcopal Conference owns the university (TEC). Since its inception as a teachers’ college, the University has been actively involved in academic, research, and community engagement efforts to fulfill its mandate as a distinguished academic institution, as well as responding to the government policy of expanding education facilities and trainings in the Tanzania private sector.
